PlayStation 2 Games Deserving a Sequel
The PlayStation 2 had an extensive library of over 4,000 games, but some franchises and titles left a lasting impact on the gaming world. Here are 10 PlayStation 2 games that deserve a sequel even today:
1. Black
Black, also known as “gun porn,” was praised for its stunning graphics and innovative gameplay. Although there’s a spiritual successor in Bodycount (2011), plans for a proper sequel were scrapped.
2. The Getaway
Black Monday, the sequel to the critically-acclaimed The Getaway (2006), followed an emotional and intense story in a true-to-life rendition of London. However, The Getaway 3 was teased at E3 but never materialized.
3. Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy
Developed by Midway Games, which ceased operations more than a decade ago, Psi-Ops was an innovative third-person shooter with powerful abilities and challenging boss fights. Unfortunately, it only had one release.
4. Bully
Although initially launched on PlayStation 2 before moving to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Bully (2002) has yet to receive a proper sequel. The open-world adventure keyboards featuring Jimmy Hopkins was beloved by players.
5. TimeSplitters: Future Perfect
Although TimeSplitters had a successful run, the series ended with Future Perfect (2007). Although there were claims of a sequel in 2007, it remains as the final entry.
6. Freedom Fighters
Although it laid the groundwork for games like Homefront, Freedom Fighters (2008) remains a semi-open adventure with innovative combat features but no proper sequel.
7. The Simpsons: Hit and Run
Despite being one of the most popular games on PlayStation 2, The Simpsons: Hit and Run has not received an official sequel. With no signs or suggestions by 2023, this open-world exploration of the Simpsons universe deserves a follow-up.
8. Project H Angel
This cult classic action RPG from indie developer Radian Third Studios received critical acclaim but only had a limited release in North America. A sequel, Project H Heaven, was announced but never materialized.
9. Skies of Arcadia Legends
While the original Skies of Arcadia (2000) had a sequel, the Arcadia Legends (2006) added new content and improved graphics but ultimately did not revive the entire series.
10. Dragon Quest VIII
Despite receiving a sequel in Dragon Quest IX (2011), fans of the series long for an updated version of the original entry, Dragon Quest VIII, which was released in North America and Europe only.
Conclusion
While some of these games may never receive a sequel, the PlayStation 2 library is filled with memorable experiences. With over 4,000 games released during its lifecycle, there are undoubtedly many standalone titles that deserve a modern revival.
